chromosomes redux

In my last post, I provided an estimate of how much autosomal DNA I inherited from each of my four grandparents:

  • Jonnes     32%
  • Lukemire 18%
  • Bonn      23%
  • Vermilyea 27%

Let’s go generationally deeper and discuss the DNA amounts I inherited from my great-grandparents and second great grandparents (2GGs) and even 3GGs.  The comments below are all hypothetical because I haven’t

My paternal side is divided into Jonnes and Lukemire.  Jonnes is further divided into Jones and McMullin, my great grandparents.((Our Jonnes surname derives from the standard one-N Jones, originally from Wales, but the spelling was changed around 1906.))

I believe that in this pairing I have more Jones than McMullin.

More Jones than Smith.

A lot of Jones and Corken.

More Matthews than McMullin

Probably more Brown than Matthews

As for Lukemire, it’s hard for me to tell if I have more Lukemire or more Blalock.  Since Blalock is a brick wall.

More Lukemire than Homan.

Probably more Blalock than Kennelly.

On my maternal side,

More Aaberge than Bonsmoen.((The Bonn surname is a simplication of the farm name Bonsmoen, located in Eidsvoll Municipality.))

Within Bonsmoen, it is impossible for me to say whether I have more Bonn or dalum.

In Aaberge, it’s also difficult to say whether I have more Aaberge or Hafslo.

My guess is that I am more Vikheim than anything.

Vermilyea more than King.

More Vermilyea than Whitney.

Apparently have a lot of both Vermilyea and Mead.

Within King, more King than Miller and more Green than King.

I have confirmed DNA ancestry from 31 of my 32 3GGs.  The only one I don’t have confirmation on is William Blalock’s wife Katherine.  I almost certainly have DNA from her as well but have never been able to determine her surname.

Of the 64 surname from the 4GG generation level that I believe I have inherited the most DNA from include

The plethora of Lukemire matches is made possible by the greather number of Lukemire cousins in the 2C – 3C  range.  My Jonnes 2GG (Dr. Nelson E. Jones) only had 2 children and his only child to bear children, my great-grandfather (Dr. Howard Jones), had 5 children but only 5 grandchildren.  My Lukemire great-grandfather (Wilber Lukemire), on the other hand, bore 7 children and 24 grandchildren.((The last of the 24 grandchildren of Wilbur Lukemire died just last year, age 93!))  It isn’t until you go back to my 3GG Henry Jones and 4GG Thomas Jones when the size of the Jones families equals or exceeds the Lukemires.
